Forgetting after care instructions is an extremely common phenomenon, and this is exceptionally true after being in a longer session. However, this instance also appears very commonly amongst our piercing clients despite the appointment being a relatively short process.
So, what is the common factor?
The truth is: our bodies go under a lot of stress when undergoing these modifications. Whether it be tattooing or piercing, your body has a natural stress response that can ultimatey affect your retention for verbal instructions. That stress response may vary from person to person, but by the time your body is relaxed again, you could have forgotten some -if not all- of the after care instructions.
What is the solution to this problem?
There is more to the solution than simply looking up general after care questions online after your tattoo. The solution to the problem actually starts before you schedule your tattoo appointment. The first step is to find a reputable shop. The best practice in doing this would be to look at the shop website, as well as the portfolios of the piercers and tattoo artists in the shop. Our recommendation is to observe the relationship they have with their clientele. Healed photos, jewelry changeouts, and frequent client interactions are typically green flags for a shop. Also, be sure that their website is user friendly and easy to navigate. This shows that the shop values engagement, rather than a simple transactional service.
The next step, is to scan the shop website for after care instructions. It may seem obvious, but it often goes unchecked. The FAQ page is a great place to start if you’re unsure about how to navigate their site. If there is no after care page, this brings us to our final step.
The last step, is to let go of the idea that you can’t go back into the shop or call with questions. Feeling comfortable going back to the shop with questions or concerns is so important in terms of your relationship with your artist and your tattoo or piercing. This should benefit both you and the piercer/artist with mutual feedback and communication.
Remember to have your back
The key to remembering your aftercare is to actively prepare for your body to forget the information being told to you. Having a solid, reputable shop to lean on when you are feeling forgetful will make your tattoo/piercing healing experience much more smooth and less unpredictable.
