New Tattoos and Summer Fun

So you got a new tattoo this summer and now you're ready to live your best life at the beach. The sun, sand, and water is calling for you but your new tattoos are begging you not to listen.

Fresh tattoos and bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, pools, and hot tubs should be avoided.

We often seem to forget that a tattoo is basically an open wound. We want to protect it. Avoid brackish water and chlorinated water that can cause an immediate irritation such as burning and stinging. Hot tubs are especially dangerous for new tattoos because they are kept at temperatures that allow bacteria to thrive. Basically a new tattoo should not be getting wet. If you must go in the water we suggest a second skin bandage to cover and protect the tattoo from liquids.

Sand is a natural exfoliant you want to avoid with a new tattoo.

When it comes to the summer sun you want to make sure you're staying hydrated and avoiding the direct sunlight. Prolonged sun exposure to new tattoos can cause blistering and irritation. Wear loose clothes and shield new tattoos from the sun when you can. If you have healed tattoos be sure to apply and reapply your sunscreen to keep your tattoos long lasting. Too much sun exposure can lead to discoloration and fading of tattoos.

The idea of getting a new tattoo but not showing it off may seem like a bummer but your tattoo will thank you in the long run.
